This is a 1 minute tour of UltraFind (designed for people who don't have time to read manuals), that for fun will also take you on a hunt for Apple system programmers being held prisoner inside your Macintosh...
First, you need to be able to read this document while you have the UltraFind program open, so either make this document's window very small, or print it out.
The hunt for prisoners inside your system:
1) Open UltraFind
2) Press Command-T on your keyboard
3) Type the word "apple" and press TAB, then type the word "computer"
4) Press your Return key TWICE
UltraFind will start scanning your disk for documents containing the words Apple and Computer. Allow it to search for a few seconds and then:
5) Press your Return key to PAUSE the scan
You now have a 'context' text listing, which is also sorted (documents with the best match for "Apple" and "Computer" are at the top). Your search Keywords have been converted to HyperText, and if you click them UltraFind's ASCII Data Reader will show you the word in the document itself. (The Data Reader also supports Drag&Drop so you can copy text out.) {If you have the Data Reader open now, please close it to carry on}:
6) Press your SpaceBar
The list window changes to a familiar "Finder View", but with some smart features: Try moving your cursor over one of the small file icons (the small icon next to the file name) and you will get a file information box at the bottom of your screen, complete with creator, type, version, etc.
7) Press your SpaceBar again
The window changes to UltraFind's unique Hierarchic View, in which you can see exactly where your files are, and you can also move them around to reorganize them. (You can also drag files or folders to and from from your desktop.)
8) Press the "Done" button at the bottom of the window to close the main list window.
9) Press Command-K on your keyboard (or press the File Type/Creator button), look for the "Type List" pop-up menu, select it and set it to "System (Macintosh)", then press "OK".
On the control window you will now have 3 green lights: Text Search, File Type, Files. (If you don't, you did not follow these instructions properly.)
10) Press your Return key
UltraFind will now find one file only (unless you have multiple systems), and will display only 4 or 5 lines of text. Look carefully at the last line. Click on any HyperText keyword to read the full message.
(Congratulations, you are one of very few people who have ever seen the famous "Prisoners of the system" message hidden in the Mac System Software. The message changes with each version of the system, so we do not know what your message says.)
If you would like to find the "Prisoners of the system" message again later, then just do this now:
11) Press Command-S on your keyboard and type: "Find Prisoners" (where it says 'save the current search routine as...'). Then press "OK"
Next time you want to find the prisoners, you can just press Command-1.
Of course instead of Apple prisoners, you could search for anything, and not just on your disk(s) - you can also search in text indexes, on your network, and on the internet.
